Whether it's supporting recently immigrated families to integrate, empowering children and youth to achieve their dreams, or providing emergency support for vulnerable families in our community – the Mahurangi Hope Community Trust team is here to help.
After school on Tuesdays an energetic group of Pasifika primary school students join us for an afternoon programme that combines learning with games, and art/craft activities. The programme focuses on supporting children to master their times tables and to develop a reading habit before they transition into high school education. As most of the students are from Kiribati, our programme also encourages students to use and maintain their te taetae ni Kirbati through songs, games and tataro.
Around 60 Pasifika High School students join us on Wednesday afternoons to complete homework with the support of our tutors. After homework is completed students receive coaching from North Harbour Volleyball coaches, and enjoy a hearty dinner together. Students are also supported with career planning, and a school translation and support service for families is offered.
Forty food parcels are provided weekly to whanau in the community facing financial hardship. Foodbank is a practical way to show the love of God and the care for those currently facing crisis and lack.
We have been partnering with local schools to facilitate education workshops. These workshops help orientate families of new immigrant students in utilising school apps and parent portals, and strengthen understanding of the New Zealand education system.
Providing college students with individual mentoring and group life skill training, our youth workers are immersed at Mahurangi College helping empower students to achieve their goals and aspirations.
Learn some top tips on saving energy, which means saving money in return. We run regular workshop training and have three coaches available for home visits to install LED light bulbs and demonstrate power-saving practices.
A vibrant group of Kiribati aine (women) gather together weekly to share their traditional art of Tibuta making. Over time the group has evolved into a reliable support system for local Kiribati women, reducing immigration related social isolation and providing opportunities for the group to form bonds with other community groups.
Our Mahurangi Vision Community Trust has developed a close relationship with the Mahurangi Pasifika community since its inception in 2011. Part of what we do includes facilitating five Pasifika festivals celebrating music, language and food to help families maintain their cultural connections.
With programmes and services running throughout the week and weekends, we have a strong team that supports, cares for and coordinates the work we do out in the surrounding community.
Jono, works alongside the team as general manager of the trust. The former medical doctor is out there securing funding for programmes and representing the trust within the wider Mahurangi community. Reporting, recruiting, writing policy and procedures to ensure high quality programmes and services are delivered is also on his books. But the reward is all in hearing of and seeing lives being transformed, meeting people with a passion for the community, and supporting vulnerable people and whanau to reach their potential. When he isn't at work you'll find Jono fishing, hiking or hanging out with his family and friends.

If there's anyone who can create a welcoming environment while keeping the pantry stocked, it's Lara. She's been a part of the Mahurangi Hope Church community for more than 15 years volunteering in the senior youth group and kitchen management. Her roles include overseeing the Foodbank's rosters, parcels and operating systems four days a week, while also coordinating hospitality for the Hope Centre. These roles allow her to practically show the love of God to people, and Lara loves how supporting families and creating warm, inviting spaces can foster meaningful relationships. In her spare time she juggles family commitments with five kids and her husband on their lifestyle block.

Sarah brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to her role as Team Leader and Youth Worker for 24/7 Youth at Mahurangi College. She’s out there supporting and supervising the team of workers connecting with youth, helping them create positive relationships, develop leadership skills, and linking them with out-of-school activities. Sarah’s a support voice for students in the school and community and acts as a liaison for the Trust, Police, Oranga Tamariki and Community Support groups. In the summer you’ll find her at the beach paddleboarding or listening to podcasts and reading.

Etitara is always busy weaving Pasifika families together with the local community, so naturally she oversees the Kiribati Women’s Sewing Group and is the cultural advisor and support worker for the Trust. Visiting families in their homes, Etitara is there to provide support, help overcome challenges and pray with the people she is welcomed by. It’s something she loves to do, along with socialising with friends over meals and going to the beach with her family.

Heather does all things admin. Her behind the scenes organisational work helps keep things in order and working smoothly. However, the best part of the job for Heather is the people. Fellow staff members and the Pasifika kids are the highlights of the week. Heather also works for the Anglican Church helping assist the running of programme Seasons for Growth – a change and loss programme designed for children, teens and adults alike. While not working, Heather loves making things, sewing and knitting in particular, along with walking her dog and tackling weeds in her home garden.
